Arsenal injury news: The latest from the Gunners' treatment room as Mikel Arteta faces a race against time to have a fully-fit squad for the Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest
It was a statement win for Mikel Arteta's men, who showed all the grit they will need for a long season by competing until the final moments of a game with few chances. Having had the most clearcut opportunities throughout, the Gunners now have five days until the Premier League returns.
In a boost for Arteta on the field, he was able to overcome the might of Pep Guardiola's squad without calling upon Jorghino, Gabriel Jesus, Folarin Balogun or Oleksandr Zinchenko.
Jesus was ruled out before the game and will miss the clash with Nottingham Forest on Saturday with a knee injury. "He’s fine," Arteta said before the game.
Mikel Arteta Reacts To Arsenal's Community Shield Victory
"He’s obviously disappointed because he was feeling good and then this issue came up that nobody expected. We had to do a little procedure there but unfortunately, it was the best thing to do and the quicker the better. We made that decision. I’m sure he will be back soon and very fit."
The player was asked how he was feeling after the game by football.london but only offered a minor update when quizzed on how he was feeling. "Good, good," he said.
It meant that Kai Havertz got the nod up front with the continued absence of Balogun. He has missed nearly all of the pre-season preparation and hasn't featured since the MLS All-Star clash, when he was a second-half substitute. With a foot injury halting most of his preparation, Balogun is now a doubt for Forest after not being included in the 20-man Community Shield squad.
As well as struggling physically, Balogun is also a serious candidate to exit the club permanently with transfer speculation continuing to surround him.
Zinchenko has also missed all of pre-season and was left out of the squad. "Fitness is good, I feel much better," he said after coming on in the Game4Ukraine charity match at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
"I would love to be ready for tomorrow but the manager is going to decide. I need to get back into my best version before the season."
There was a big boost for Arteta on the field though, Bukayo Saka returned to the fold having been out of the Emirates Cup clash with Monaco last week. He was ill for that game but started at Wembley.
Nicolas Pepe, Nuno Tavares, Cedric Soares and Albert Sambi Lokonga were all left out as they face moves away from the club this summer. Arteta has already admitted that he is aiming to reduce the squad numbers, explaining: "Well, we’re in the process [of reducing the numbers]. We’re working on a few things. We have to make a few decisions. There’s still time to do that
"We’re very happy with the squad we have that’s for sure. As well we have to make sure we can share the minutes around the team to have a healthy competition in the squad and we’re working on that."
Jorginho had a slight muscle injury which has saw him miss the clash with City but the Italian has remained a staple in Arteta's team and will surely be back in contention come Saturday's meeting with Steve Cooper's Forest.
